The Killing Grounds in the Normandy ‘Triangle’ - June

The 5/7th Gordons were the first battalion of HD to set foot on French soil in Operation Overlord. At sea, maps and final instructions were unsealed by the officer commanding troops on each craft and the plan of attack was revealed to the men. The large town inland was revealed to be Caen, and the landing beach, Courseulles-sur-Mer. Lying offshore a great mass of shipping was seen, vast battleships, busy little destroyers, flak (AA) ships, barrage balloons, LCTs, LSIs, LCIs, liberty ships and overhead the waves of aircraft hammering the beach defences. By late afternoon on D-Day, 6th June the Gordons had waded through several feet of water carrying their 70 lbs weight kit. By 8pm they were all ashore (less transport) and 153 Bde concentrated at Ranville four miles inland. Lt Col ‘Chick’ Thomson OC 5th Black Watch was by chance acting as Brigadier since Brigadier ‘Nap’ Murray’s ship (with the battalion 2i/cs and Bde HQ) was in the queue of ships waiting to unload. 3rd Canadian Division by this time were several miles further inland.
